Contend for the Faith

Contend for the Faith

Jude 1:3 (NIV)

“…although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” – Jude 1:3 (NIV)

Jude, in his letter or in this sermon, started as an encouragement however, his message turned into a warning. As Christ’s followers, we will be called to contend for the faith. In verses 3 to 4, Jude uses strong language to signal to the believers the importance of contending for our faith. The ancient Greek word “contend” comes from the athletic world – from the wrestling mat. It is a strengthened form of the word meaning “to agonise.” Therefore “contend” speaks of hard and diligent work. The use of the word contends, in the grammar of ancient Greek, in the present infinitive shows that the believers’ struggle is continuous.

We contend for ‘the faith’ because it is valuable. You walk into a jewellry store boasting high-quality diamonds, but there is no security, and all the jewellry is out in the open. No security, and none of the pieces are encased. What would be your thoughts? These pieces are not valuable. Because valuables are protected, worthless things are not.

By becoming an unflinching witness, believers can contend for their faith. We are ambassadors of the faith as Christ-followers. The more we support one another in the faith, the more we come alongside the weaker believers to help them in their faith walk. As Christians, we are contending for the faith when we support our pastors and leaders. Supporting our pastors and leaders in ministry and praying for them as they share God’s Word.

Believers, we are being called to contend for our faith and support one another. God’s grace be with you today. Let us be an example of love and faith to those around us. Let us be an example of strength and courage. Let us be an example of hope and faith in the darkest of times.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, let me become aware of my responsibility to contend for the faith, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
